On December 5, 2023, the Svikarokti Foundation donated ₹3 lakhs (Indian Rupees) to the Chief Minister Relief Fund, Sikkim, to support victims of the devastating floods in the state. The contribution was handed over by Denzome Sampang, President of Svikarokti Foundation, alongside GBLO representatives, during the Svikarokti Global Tour 2023 – Sikkim Edition held in Gangtok.
The relief check was graciously received by the Secretary to Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, who expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the Sikkim government. She noted the generosity of the Foundation and thanked the team for extending solidarity in a time of crisis.
This donation came in the wake of the October 4, 2023 disaster, when heavy rains caused the South Lhonak glacial lake in North Sikkim to breach its banks, resulting in a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF). The sudden surge of water destroyed the Teesta III Dam at Chungthang within minutes, swept away bridges, damaged thousands of houses, and left entire towns cut off. At least 55 people lost their lives, dozens went missing, and more than 7,000 people were displaced, forcing many into relief camps.
The gesture by Svikarokti Foundation not only reflects its commitment to peace, compassion, and responsibility but also stands as an example of how communities can come together to support those in need during times of natural calamities.
